Milk production has a significant impact on cow nutrient requirements and thus feeding and supplementation strategies. In beef cows, milk production increases from birth to about 60 days after calving. From 60 days after calving until weaning milk production continues to decrease with time. Milk production is not influenced by calf size.
Both energy and protein requirements are highest for cows about 60 days after calving (i.e., at peak milk production). The best quality hay or forage available should be provided around this time to help meet energy and protein requirements and control weight loss in lactating cows.
