Poor drought management strategies can result in negative impacts on forage production and cow herd productivity long after the drought is over. During a drought it is important not to overgraze. Overgrazing leads to reduced forage yields both during and after a drought, potential stand loss, as well as reduced cow body condition.
A sacrifice pasture is a pasture where cattle can be maintained and fed during a drought. Sacrificing one pasture prevents overgrazing on the rest of the property.
Underfeeding cows during a drought will result in lower body conditions scores, lower pregnancy rates, and most importantly fewer calves to sell.
