Best Practices for Cleaning and Storing Cattle Syringes

It is important to clean multi-dose syringes after working cattle. Never use soap or any disinfectants as they can leave residues in the syringe which can reduce vaccine efficacy.

One cleaning method is to rinse off the outside with tap water to remove any dirt. Then draw up boiling distilled water from a container and flush the inside several times. With this approach the syringe does not have to be taken apart. After cleaning, the syringes can be stored in a freezer until they are needed again. Placing the syringes in the freezer eliminates the concern over some moisture remaining in the syringe.
